Wildlife spotlight
Tarantula
Range: Warm areas around the world, on all continents except Antarctica
Diet: Insects such as grasshoppers, other spiders, and small vertebrates such as lizards
Interesting info: With a leg span of 11 inches, male goliath bird-eating spiders are the largest tarantulas.
Tarantulas are spiders with venomous fangs, eight hairy legs, and two appendages on either side of their mouth for touching, tasting, and handling prey. Tarantulas are sensitive to vibrations in the ground, which might signal the presence of prey or danger.
