The U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral argument in Moore v. Harper on December 7th. The significance of that day is not lost on us. This case could determine the future of our federal elections.

So, where do we come in?
All On The Line’s affiliate, the National Redistricting Foundation, is a leader in the case and is supporting the Harper respondents. Moore v. Harper is an appeal of a North Carolina Supreme Court ruling, initiated by voters the NRF supported, which struck down the state’s congressional map as a partisan gerrymander in violation of the state constitution. After Republicans in the state legislature failed to adopt a lawful replacement map, a state court adopted an interim plan for use in the 2022 election.

Why is this case significant, you ask?
The U.S. Supreme Court decision could determine the future of federal elections by removing the checks and balances within states, and leaving our federal elections solely to the discretion of extremist Republican-controlled state legislatures. It could also undermine independent redistricting commissions that produce fair maps like the citizens commission in Michigan.

All On The Line has campaigned for fair and transparent redistricting for years now. We’ve promoted equity and justice in our advocacy and in the courts pushing for fair redistricting process and provided a voice to previously marginalized communities.
