Dear Friends,
I’m writing to let you know that the application for federal student loan debt relief is now live. As the Biden administration announced in August, the Department of Education will provide student debt relief to up to 43 million Americans. The new plan will cancel up to $10,000 in debt for eligible borrowers, and up to $20,000 for eligible borrowers who are also Pell Grant recipients. If you are wondering about whether you qualify for relief and where you can apply, please see below.
Who is Eligible
You are eligible for relief if your individual income was less than $125,000 in 2020 or 2021 ($250,000 for married couples) and if you received an eligible federal loan on or before June 30, 2022.
The following federal loans qualify for student debt forgiveness:
- William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) Program loans
- Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program loans held by the Department of Education (ED) or in default at a guaranty agency
- Federal Perkins Loan Program loans held by ED
- Defaulted loans (includes ED-held or commercially serviced Subsidized Stafford, Unsubsidized Stafford, parent PLUS, graduate PLUS; and Perkins loans held by the ED)
Where to Apply
You can apply for forgiveness here. The application will take approximately five minutes to complete.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact my office at (202) 225-5541 with any additional questions.
Sincerely,
Jim
