I’ve long wished we lived in a time when laws were not necessary to safeguard us from inequality. But laws – and the elected officials who write them – are what determine access to the voting booth, whether someone can have a safe abortion, or how much you pay for prescription drugs.

Let me make this clear. If Maggie Hassan hadn’t won her last election, the Affordable Care Act would’ve been repealed, and Republicans would currently hold the Senate majority.
There are a lot of Republicans – all in lockstep with Mitch McConnell – who will do anything to win this year. They know that if they defeat Maggie, they regain control of the Senate chamber.
No one has ever regretted getting off the sidelines. And now, with the most extreme Republican party of my lifetime teetering on the edge of regaining power, we need all hands on deck.
