Hi John-

As some of you may already know, Pacific Coast Coal Company may be trying to re-open a coal mine in King County that has been dormant since 1999. Discharges from the mine have exceeded allowable limits, and nearby Lake Sawyer has suffered from chronic phosphorus pollution. PCCC has repeatedly failed to clean up the site.

You can educate yourself about this with our convenient one-page info sheet.

We've been waiting and preparing for a draft permit to drop from the Department of Ecology that would allow the open-pit coal mine to resume activity. Once it does, we'll need to do everything we can to put pressure on the Department not to grant this permit.

A coal mine would increase carbon emissions at a time when our most important coal should be reducing carbon emissions! The impacts on clean air and water would be a public health risk and would reverse decades of progress in moving away from dirty fossil fuels.

We've included all the basics about this Black Diamond extraction site in the form of a handy one-pager HERE. Please share this widely.

(If you haven't already, you can be added to the JH action listserv by emailing [email protected].)

This coal mine would be the only operating mine operating in King County. Let's make sure it never re-opens for mining!
