Representative Adriano Espaillat Leads Congressional Effort to Recognize Roberto Clemente

Recognizing the significant human rights activism and baseball stardom legacy of Roberto Clemente, Espaillat urges Major League Baseball to retire the number 21 in honor of his legendary life and career.

NEW YORK, NY -- Today, Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) introduced H. Res 857 – a resolution Urging the Secretary of the Interior to recognize the historical significance of Roberto Clemente's place of death near Piñones in Loíza, Puerto Rico, by adding it to the National Register of Historic Places.

“Roberto Clemente was a trailblazer in the fight for Puerto Rican civil rights and utilized his stardom to advocate and defend the rights of Black and Brown communities, both on the field and in the streets,” said Rep. Espaillat. “After the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., in 1968, Clemente led his teammates in refusing to play Opening Day until after Dr. King’s funeral and even wrote a public statement showing his respect of Dr. King’s visionary leadership, which inspired his own actions to demand equity for communities of color, better working conditions for MLB players, visiting sick children, and his work to help level the playing field through training clinics for minority youth.

“Roberto Clemente was the model player social advocate, and I am proud to introduce a resolution to honor his life and legacy and urge the MLB to retire the number 21 league-wide as a show of respect for the tremendous impact on the lives of others through his humanitarian efforts around the world,” Espaillat concluded.

Roberto Clemente was the first Puerto Rican and first person of Latino heritage to win a World Series as a starter, be named MVP, be named World Series MVP, and be elected to the Hall of Fame. Clemente became a union leader in the incipient Major League Baseball Players Association and defended players’ rights to demand better working conditions and benefits. In every city where the Pirates played, Clemente visited sick children in hospitals. He put his heart and soul into training clinics, providing baseball lessons and fun for boys and girls in Pittsburgh, his home island of Puerto Rico, and throughout Latin America.

As the League did with Jackie Robinson’s iconic 42 in 1997 on the fiftieth anniversary of his breaking the color barrier in professional sports, the Espaillat Resolution is urging the MLB to retire the number 21 league-wide in recognize the fiftieth anniversary of Roberto Clemente’s tragic yet heroic death.

Since 1973, Major League Baseball has presented the Roberto Clemente Award to one player in the league who best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual’s contribution to his team. In 2002, Major League Baseball declared the first annual Roberto Clemente Day and in 2021, Major League Baseball announced September 15th would be the permanent date of Roberto Clemente Day to coincide with the beginning of Hispanic Heritage month.

Reconociendo el importante activismo por los derechos humanos y el legado del estrellato en el béisbol de Roberto Clemente, Espaillat insta a las Grandes Ligas de Béisbol a retirar el número 21 en honor a su legendaria vida y carrera

NEW YORK, NY – Hoy, el congresista Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) introdujo la H. Res 857 ―una resolución que insta al Secretario del Interior a reconocer el significado histórico del lugar de la muerte de Roberto Clemente cerca de Piñones en Loíza, Puerto Rico, al agregarlo al Registro Nacional de Lugares Históricos.

“Roberto Clemente fue un pionero en la lucha por los derechos civiles de Puerto Rico y utilizó su estrellato para abogar y defender los derechos de las comunidades negras y latinas, tanto en el terreno de juego como fuera de este”, dijo el Rep. Espaillat. “Después del asesinato del Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., en 1968, Clemente llevó a sus compañeros de equipo a negarse a jugar el Día Inaugural hasta después del funeral del Dr. King e incluso escribió una declaración pública mostrando su respeto por el liderazgo visionario del Dr. King, que inspiró sus propias acciones para exigir equidad para las comunidades de color, mejores condiciones de trabajo para los jugadores de la MLB, visitas a niños enfermos y su trabajo para ayudar a nivelar el campo de juego a través de clínicas de capacitación para jóvenes de las minorías.

“Roberto Clemente fue el jugador modelo en defensa social, y me enorgullece introducir una resolución para honrar su vida y legado e instar a la MLB a retirar el número 21 de toda la liga como muestra de respeto por el tremendo impacto de Roberto Clemente en la vida de los demás a través de sus esfuerzos humanitarios en todo el mundo”, concluyó Espaillat.

Roberto Clemente fue el primer puertorriqueño y la primera persona de ascendencia latina en ganar una Serie Mundial como titular, ser nombrado MVP, ser nombrado MVP de la Serie Mundial y ser elegido para el Salón de la Fama. Clemente se convirtió en líder sindical en la incipiente Asociación de Jugadores de las Grandes Ligas y defendió los derechos de los peloteros para exigir mejores condiciones laborales y beneficios. En todas las ciudades donde jugaban los Piratas, Clemente visitaba a los niños enfermos en los hospitales. Puso su corazón y alma en las clínicas de entrenamiento, brindando lecciones de béisbol y diversión para niños y niñas en Pittsburgh, su isla natal de Puerto Rico, y en toda América Latina.

Como hizo la Liga con el icónico número 42 de Jackie Robinson en 1997 en el quincuagésimo aniversario de su ruptura con la barrera del color en los deportes profesionales, la Resolución de Espaillat insta a la MLB a retirar el número 21 de toda la liga en reconocimiento del quincuagésimo aniversario de la trágica pero sin embargo heroica muerte de Roberto Clemente.

Desde 1973, las Grandes Ligas de Béisbol han otorgado el Premio Roberto Clemente a un jugador de la liga que mejor ejemplifica el deporte de béisbol a través de un carácter extraordinario, participación comunitaria, filantropía, y contribuciones positivas, dentro y fuera del terreno. En 2002, las Grandes Ligas de Béisbol declararon el primer Día anual de Roberto Clemente y en 2021, las Grandes Ligas de Béisbol anunciaron que el 15 de septiembre sería la fecha permanente del Día de Roberto Clemente para coincidir con el comienzo del mes de la Herencia Hispana.
