Dear Friend,
Every conversation we have lately is about safety. Our members are scared and for good reason. Across the country, violent crime is increasing. In a recent leadership meeting, almost every person who spoke had been impacted by violence in their community. We’re in a crisis that has no simple solutions.
Safety is inherently political. Who gets to feel safe in their neighborhoods is ultimately a question of whose lives are considered most valuable. The political conversation about safety is failing to meet the moment.
We can not allow our elected officials to talk about safety while at the same time cutting funding for schools and services our communities need.
The reasons behind the recent rise in crime are incredibly complex and can not be solved by simple solutions. The unsafe conditions we live in also didn't happen by accident. Wall Street, Real Estate, and Oil and Gas Corporations make billions exploiting our communities.
We know that safety is about resources and will continue to fight for the short and long-term solutions that our communities deserve.
Best,
Lucas Sanchez and Olivia Leirer
