In Haiti, Syria, and Lebanon, we’re saving lives from this disease

Right now, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is responding to three cholera outbreaks in Syria, Haiti, and Lebanon. Cholera is highly contagious and spreads in areas without clean water and sanitation—which means places like refugee camps, remote villages, and conflict zones are particularly vulnerable.
An effective response to cholera involves engaging on several different fronts at the same time—and as fast as possible—to treat sick patients and to stop transmission within communities.
If patients receive the care they need, deaths can be reduced from 50 percent to less than 2 percent—which is why MSF’s ability to respond swiftly in Syria, Haiti, and Lebanon is critical to preventing loss of life.
Resurgences of cholera often occur when people cannot access clean water or proper sanitation. War, conflict, and economic insecurity often contribute to these dangerous outbreaks that threaten people’s lives.
In Haiti, insecurity and violence have forced many health facilities to reduce their activities or even stop them altogether.
In Lebanon, the ongoing economic and energy crises have further restricted access to water and sanitation.
In Syria, which has the highest number of internally displaced people in the world, the outbreak has spread across the country, with more than 13,000 suspected cholera cases reported.
At MSF, we’re dedicated to fighting cholera outbreaks on all fronts through effective emergency response and treating sick patients.
