False Advertising Complaint Filed Against
Dairy Industry Ads
This week, our legal team filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission about a dairy industry campaign targeting Gen Z online gamers. The campaign, called “Beat the Lag (BTL),” uses popular video gaming platforms, such as Twitch and YouTube, and well-known gaming influencers to target youth aged 10 to 23 with an advertising campaign exalting the benefits of dairy products. “Beat the lag”, a play on gaming terminology, is used in this campaign to contend that consuming dairy products boost gamers’ energy. Our complaint alleges that this campaign makes health, environmental, and animal welfare claims that range from misleading to absolutely false.
The Prop 12 Supreme Court Hearing Took Place…….And Now We Wait
On October 11, the pork industry’s challenge to California’s Proposition 12 was heard by the Supreme Court. Prop 12 requires that eggs, veal, and pork produced and/or sold in the state comply with basic minimal space requirements to enable animals to have enough room to spread their wings or limbs and turn around. For nearly two hours, both sides made their case before the Supreme Court with the National Pork Producers Council seeking to nullify Prop 12. We, along with other animal advocacy groups, intervened to help the state of California protect Prop 12. Now, we await the Supreme Court’s decision, which is expected by June 2023.
While Proposition 12 provides some protections to farmed animals, the only way to prevent suffering is to remove animal products from your plate. For information on adopting a vegan diet visit TryVeg for recipes and tips.
