John,
Since 2020, prosecutors have used artists’ lyrics as evidence against the artist in over 500 criminal cases, primarily targeting Black artists.
This legal tactic aims to criminalize Black expression and art, and it goes against our constitutional right to freedom of speech.
The Restoring Artistic Protection (RAP) Act would help ensure that artists are protected from the wrongful use of their lyrics and speech against them in court proceedings.
Add your name in support of the RAP Act to protect artists across the country—and to protect our collective freedom of speech and expression.
I’m also supporting artists’ rights as workers who deserve to be paid a fair wage.
To stop streaming companies like Spotify from exploiting musicians, I worked with the Union of Musicians & Allied Workers to introduce a new resolution recognizing the need to directly and fairly compensate musicians every time their music is listened to on a streaming music service.
Let’s continue to protect artists across the country, as well as our collective freedom of speech and expression. Please sign today to support the Restoring Artistic Protection (RAP) Act.
In solidarity,
Rashida
