Does it feel like your parents worked less and earned more than you do today? If the answer is yes, we’re here to tell you why.
From 1938 to the 1970s, employers were required to pay time-and-a-half when their salaried employees worked over 40 hours in a week. In 1975, federal employment laws were so robust that 65% of salaried workers were covered by overtime protections. Fast-forward to today, and only 15% of salaried Americans have overtime protections.
Without overtime protections, Americans are being overworked and underpaid. That’s why we’re calling on President Biden to restore overtime pay – and Civic Action founder Nick Hanauer just participated in a special video to drum up support for this critical policy.

Current overtime laws only cover salaried workers who earn less than $35,568 per year – which means only 3 out of every 20 salaried workers are covered – but President Biden has the power to restore overtime protections to historic levels with the stroke of a pen.
By restoring the overtime threshold, millions of salaried Americans would get more money in their pockets, more of their time back, or a bit of both. And the best part is it doesn’t have to cost employers a penny: If they don’t want to pay time-and-a-half, they can simply send their employees home on time, or they can finally hire enough workers to get the job done. Even in the long run, this is great news for our economy.
President Biden has the power to restore overtime protections without going through Congress, but it’s going to take a massive grassroots movement to convince him to act. That’s why we’re spreading the word about overtime pay through Nick Hanauer’s video.
