Join Native Vote for a week of events you won’t want to miss

This is a big week for the Wisconsin Native Vote team. We will be hosting and tabling at events around the state to make sure our people are ready to vote November 8.

This Friday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. will be our biggest event of the year: our MKE Native Vote Mural Unveiling! We hope you can join us at the Gerald L. Ignace Indian Health center as we present a mural by artist Christopher Sweet featuring a healing jingle dress dancer, and illustrating the land, water, and seven generations. This event – and the creation of the mural – have been five months in the making. Mark Denning will be our emcee and we will have drummers, jingle dress dancers, Indian tacos, and more. This will be an event of celebration and healing that you won’t want to miss.

Christopher Sweet is an Ojibwe and Ho-Chunk painter who creates art in relation to his Native American culture. He often paints Native people on a natural landscape showcasing the pride and beauty of his people.

“Creating art keeps me focused on the important things in my life which include family, unity, and healthy ways,” he says. His studio called Blue Bear Studio is located in the south-central area of Wisconsin near the Ho-Chunk tribe. Sweet has created the artwork for Wisconsin Native Vote for years, including pieces featured on our t-shirts, pledge-to-vote cards, and more. 

This Thursday, Oct. 20 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., our Regional Tribal Organizer Maria Haskins will be hosting an online event called Harvesting the Power of the Native Vote. You can register here >>>

We’ll be joined by Lucy Grignon, owner of Ancient Roots Homestead, who will teach us how to use, cook, and store crops from the harvest. Then Haskins will connect the harvest to the importance of voting and make sure the audience is prepared to vote in this election.

On Monday, Oct. 24, Cherie Thunder, Native Vote’s regional tribal organizer, working with the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin, will be tabling at the Menominee 4-H Halloween Party at the Cultural Learning Center. She will be talking with community members and gathering pledge-to-vote cards. 

Lastly, I will be tabling at the Hunting Moon Pow Wow at the Wisconsin Center in Milwaukee from Friday to Sunday. All are welcome to attend, but make sure to stop by the Native Vote table and say hi!
