Revenues from sales of gas are one of the biggest sources of income for the Burmese military, but President Biden has ignored calls for US sanctions to help cut the flow of money the Burmese military gets from gas sales.
Now activists from Burma and US human rights organisations are making a renewed push to persuade President Biden to finally act and Burma Campaign UK is joining them.
Will you join human rights activists from Burma and call on President Biden to sanction gas revenue now?
When we asked you to support our campaign to persuade the EU to sanction gas revenue, it worked.
Thousands of people signed a petition to EU members and in February this year the EU sanctioned Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE), the state-owned body now under the control of the military, which receives money from international sales of gas from Burma.
These sanctions even stopped gas revenue from a gas project run by Chinese, Korean and Indian companies, as the Chinese bank which transferred money to MOGE didn’t want to risk making financial transfers to them.
We stopped millions of dollars reaching the military!
US sanctions on gas revenue could have an even bigger impact.
