The sight of litter gives us goosebumps all year round, but Halloween night can have a particularly bloodcurdling impact on our environment!

Whether it’s discarded treat wrappers or litter left behind by tricksters, during the days around – and just after – Halloween, local neighbourhoods need our support more than ever.

So this autumn, we’re calling on our community of #LitterHeroes to get outside in their scariest outfit and pick up litter from 24 October to 1 November.

WE'RE RECYCLING TONNES OF
MARINE PLASTIC 

Environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy has teamed up with plastic processing experts Milspeed on a ground-breaking project to develop the large-scale recycling of fishing nets in the UK.

Each year, it’s estimated that 640,000 tonnes of fishing nets end up as plastic waste in our oceans.

These nets can continue to ‘ghost fish’ for up to 600 years, with countless fish, dolphins and seals killed after getting trapped in them.

Since March 2020, Keep Britain Tidy and Milspeed have been working together to capture and recycle more than 40 tonnes of trawl net.

The nets are turned into recycled plastic pellets which can be used to create useful products, meaning disused fishing nets do not become waste.

This is the only fully UK-based trawl net recycling scheme and, until its launch, the only options were sending the nets to landfill or exporting them to Europe for recycling.

The Ocean Recovery Project is made possible thanks Scottish Power Foundation and the Squire Charitable Trust, as well as partners including Brixham Harbour and volunteers in the local area.
