I voted against my party's leaders because it was the right thing to do for Kansas.‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

Hi John.

At the height of the pandemic in 2020, our community desperately needed help. Thousands were losing their lives and livelihoods. Addressing the crisis meant focusing on solutions, not more partisanship and political games.

Unfortunately, my party’s leaders at the time took a different approach. Instead of focusing on targeted relief that could actually become law, they decided to push forward on a partisan bill with a wide scope that would be doomed in the Senate.

This political theater just meant delaying the emergency aid that people desperately needed. That’s why I stood up to my own party and was one of only fourteen democrats to vote against their partisan bill.

I know a lot of Kansans are frustrated by partisanship and political games. That goes for both sides of the aisle, which is why it’s important to stand up when I disagree with my own party.

It’s understandable when people have honest disagreements. But at the end of the day, people need solutions to lower their costs, strengthen their schools, and keep their communities safe.

We can’t just remain divided for the sake of partisan politics. Kansans need solutions – not more extremism and division.

My focus is on concrete and bipartisan solutions to build a better future – with more jobs and lower prices. That’s why as Vice Chair of the Infrastructure Committee, I worked with Republicans and Democrats to pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The law is modernizing U.S. 69 in Overland Park and replacing lead pipes in Olathe.

Although their relief bill had provisions I favored, that wasn’t the point. Public servants shouldn’t be about political posturing – we have to find common ground and make a difference in people’s lives.

That has been my focus throughout my time in the U.S. House of Representatives.

In fact, nearly 75 percent of the bills I’m cosponsoring are bipartisan.

I’ll work with anyone, in either party, who has a good idea that can make a difference for Kansans.

I’m fighting corruption and extremism across the political spectrum so we can deliver results for hardworking Kansans. That’s why I’ve stood up to my own party on several occasions.

I’ve stood up to my own party to stop congressional pay raises and to stop insider stock trading in Congress. I also pushed the President to reopen closed oil refineries to get gas prices down, and stood up to my party’s leaders in the House by introducing a bill to suspend the federal gas tax.

I’m here to serve every person and corner of our community to the best of my ability. Whether we agree on every issue or not, I’m always here to serve you – regardless of party.
