Should Police Use License Plate Readers To Track Women Seeking Abortions?
License plate readers could be weaponized against women seeking abortions in states where the procedure is banned.
Flock, a license plate reading company, has technology that captures license plate details and stores them in a vast database with the aim of reducing crime. Flock’s national law enforcement database allows police departments to share license plate footage with other departments. Police in states where abortion is legal can share the footage with states where abortion is illegal.
Activists worry that police could stake out abortion clinics to collect data on doctors and patients, and cross-reference them in Flock’s database to find personal information, including home address.
