Data Confirms: Forest Fires Are Worsening

Forest fires in the Brazilian Amazon reached their highest levels in over a decade earlier this month. This latest surge in one of the world’s largest tropical rainforests is part of a troubling pattern: WRI analysis finds that forest fires are burning nearly twice as much forest today as they did 20 years ago. In the tropics, fire-related tree cover loss increased by about 36,000 hectares per year from 2001-2021. Read more.

Hotter, drier conditions driven by climate change allow forest fires to burn longer and more intensely. These fires produce more emissions that fuel more warming, creating a dangerous feedback loop. Graphic by WRI

One month out from this year’s COP27 summit, have they turned promises into progress? WRI experts assess the follow-through. Read more.
