John, I'm coming to you with great news for the expansion of voting rights in Washington, D.C.
Yesterday, the Council of the District of Columbia unanimously passed the Elections Modernization Amendment Act, which solidifies several popular expansions to voting rights that were implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Some of the major benefits provided by this bill include:
-
Securing permanent access to mail voting, with every registered DC voter receiving a postage-prepaid mail-in ballot
-
Ensuring permanent and accessible ballot drop boxes
-
Establishing permanent Vote Centers, where any registered DC voter can vote in person
-
Increasing access to voting and elections for incarcerated individuals
We applaud the Council of the District of Columbia for this monumental effort, and thank Chairman Allen for his leadership on this bill. By passing this bill, the Council made a decisive step towards ensuring voting is truly accessible for every voter in DC. Click here to read our full statement.
