We are excited to share another story <[link removed]> in our “Below the Line: Stories from Low Wage Workers in the South” series! 



Wrapping up our current set of interviews with farmworkers in NC, meet two community organizers, Leticia Zavala and Angelita Morrison. Together they unpack the true conditions facing immigrant workers in the south and what it will take to build a more equitable system for all. 



“If we really took action, those of us who work in the fields, who work in meat packing, the immigrants who suffer so much injustice, if we took action to demand what’s ours, we would paralyze this country,” Leticia reflects. “Because no one would have food. We control the most important thing… but we receive the least compensation.”

Angelita explains, “An undocumented person receives their taxpayer identification number, does their taxes, but a lot of people I know are older than me and still have to be working to survive. They don’t have any help, and they’ve worked their whole lives here.”

“Si de verdad tomáramos acción, los que andamos en los campos, los que estamos en las empacadoras, los inmigrantes que sufrimos de tanta injusticia, si tomáramos acción para exigir lo que es nuestro, paráramos el país,” Leticia reflexiona. “Porque dejarían de comer todo el mundo. Controlamos lo más importante… pero somos los menos beneficiados.”



Angelita explica, “El indocumentado le dieron su ITIN, hace sus taxas, pero muchísima gente que conozco está mas grande que yo y todavía tiene que estar trabajando para comer. Para su comida diaria. Y no tiene ni una ayuda. Y trabajó todo su vida aquí.”
