When it comes to campaigning, our motto has always been to focus on our record, and not give our extreme right-wing opponent any free publicity.
But even if we don’t talk about them, the reality is we have to take our MAGA Republican challenger seriously. Even if they don’t win, a better than expected margin can undermine the momentum that Alexandria and our movement have had since she was reelected decisively two years ago.
Our MAGA challenger is running an aggressive race. Last week, they interrupted Alexandria’s official congressional town hall with an #OustAOC banner. It was disruptive and rude to the constituents who attended what's supposed to be an apolitical civic event, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Here’s just a few other things about our opponent:
If our opponent does better than expected, Fox New pundits and the right wing will seize on it. Alexandria will have less credibility as a messenger for the working class, and Democratic leaders will be even less willing to pursue progressive policies.
We know that communities in The Bronx, Queens, and across the country support our message and want AOC to stay in Congress – but we need to show it by making sure Alexandria wins by a huge margin.
When we won the second most expensive House race in the country – that sent a signal to Democrats and Republicans. We were able to pass the biggest investment in climate action ever, student loan debt relief, and gun control. Now with reproductive freedom and so much else on the line, we can’t afford to look weak.
