Hawai`i To Fund Dozens of New Nurse Instructor Position

Aloha and congratulations to Laura Reichhardt, MS, APRN, AGPCNP-BC, director of the Hawai`i State Center for Nursing, who spoke at a news conference with Gov. David Ige to announce $1.75 million that will support new instructor positions and University of Hawaiʻi nursing programs statewide. Among those Reichhardt credits for the success is Carrie Oliveria, PhD, the Center's associate specialist for workforce research.

Penn Appoints Perez as Buividas Chair

Penn Nursing has appointed Adriana Perez, PhD, ANP-BC, FAAN, as the Anthony Buividas Term Chair in Gerontology. Perez, a diversity consultant for the Campaign for Action, is associate professor of nursing in the school&rsquo;s family and community health department and is a scientist at the Center for Improving Care Delivery for the Aging, part of Penn&rsquo;s Resource Center for Minority Aging Research.

Health Equity Innovations Fund RFP released &ndash; Applications due Nov 15
The AARP Center for Health Equity through Nursing and the RWJF Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action released a call for proposals to fund efforts to eliminate structural racism and other structural inequities within the nursing profession, health systems or community that lead to improved access to care and services for those most disproportionally impacted by health disparities. Awards of up to $50,000 will be given. Applications are due November 15, 2022.


Projects that demonstrate collaboration with the Campaign for Action&rsquo;s state-based Action Coalitions will be viewed more favorably.

Paper Examines Effort to Restore Minorities&rsquo; Trust in Research
Health disparities in the U.S. represent a public health crisis, rooted in historical practices and systemic barriers. Now a published paper, &ldquo;Restoring trust in research among historically underrepresented communities: A call to action for antiracism research in nursing,&rdquo; proposes ways to progress, including adopting an antiracism framework for research and inclusive research teams.

Vermont Program a Model for Long-Term Services at Home
Home-based care management coordinates housing, health, and long-term services and supports, and now a report evaluates how the Support and Services at Home program in Vermont is a model for how such programs can work. The program includes partnerships with housing partners, community agencies, wellness nurses, and care coordinators.

Clinical Advisor reports on a recent talk by Winifred Quinn, PhD, FAANP(H), FAAN, in which she details the steps some states have taken that have led to improved health care for residents. Quinn is director of advocacy and consumer affairs at the Center to Champion Nursing in America, which coordinates the Campaign for Action. The approaches include ways to promote health equity as well as remove legal barriers to nurses&rsquo; practice.

Plan Proposes Ways To Support Well-Being of Health Care Workers
With more health care workers than ever considering leaving their professions, the U.S. health system is at stake. It&rsquo;s that threat that has led to proposed solutions from the National Academy of Medicine Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being and Resilience&mdash;a network of almost 200 organizations&mdash;in the form of a national plan that includes strategies to decrease burnout and strengthen clinicians&rsquo; well-being.

$80 Million to Go to Expanding Nursing Workforce
The U.S. Department of Labor&rsquo;s new Nursing Expansion Grant Program will offer $80 million to help ease America&rsquo;s nursing shortage. The funding will expand and diversify &ldquo;the pipeline of nursing professionals while advancing equity and creating pathways for workers to fill these jobs and improve the nation&rsquo;s health care system.&rdquo; One aim is to increase the number of educators; the second, to advance nurses in their educations and careers.
