Congressman Hank Johnson here, and I want to let you know how critical my friend David Cicilline has been in the fight to protect Americans against the overreaches of a right-wing Supreme Court majority.
In June, the ultraconservative majority on the court struck down Roe v. Wade, upending a half-century of settled precedent and dismantling Americans’ reproductive rights. Congress must step in and defend access to reproductive health care, but we’d be naive to think the court’s assault on Americans’ rights will end there. In the same ruling, Justice Thomas signaled that LGBTQ+ rights are now in the crosshairs, and we’ve already seen the Supreme Court dismantle voting rights piece by piece.
As Chair of the Courts Subcommittee, I’ve introduced a slate of bills to hold the Supreme Court accountable, and David has been at the forefront of this effort alongside me. He’s helped lead the fight to create and enforce a mandatory code of ethics for Supreme Court justices and to institute term limits for those appointed to the highest court.
Americans need a robust and reliable federal judiciary led by an impartial Supreme Court. The court’s credibility and the foundations of our very democracy are at stake. The Supreme Court is supposed to serve the American people and the Constitution. But lately, they’ve been serving the GOP’s political donors.
Thank you for standing with us as we work to stop the conservative takeover of the Supreme Court.
