Dear John,
Former President Donald Trump spent years evading the consequences of his actions thanks to the wealth he accumulated from his empire of scams.
Now, he’s counting on his political power to shield himself from far more serious crimes – like inciting an insurrection and stealing troves of classified documents.
In our latest video, I discuss why waiting to hold Trump accountable only emboldens him — and others like him — to continue wreaking havoc on our Constitution and the rule of law.
A failure by Attorney General Merrick Garland and the Justice Department to hold Donald Trump accountable for his actions will set a dangerous precedent – one that says former presidents and other political leaders will not be held accountable when they break the law. If Trump walks away unscathed, insurrectionists will think they can attack our democracy and get away with it. And they will be right.
Some politicians and media pundits opine this idea, claiming that a former president should not face criminal prosecution. But isn’t it more dangerous to allow a former president to avoid accountability for actions that violate the law?
For the moment, Americans who favor democracy and the rule of law control the levers of power.
But as our video explains, this might not be the case for very long.
Holding Trump accountable is not an act of partisanship. It’s a defense of our democracy, the truth, and everything that our country holds dear.
Merrick Garland must act – before it’s too late.
Thanks for watching,
Robert Reich
