Have you done a web search lately on "probability of nuclear war"? The predictions range widely, and most don't try to put a number on it, but none of the numbers thrown about is anywhere near as small as 1 percent. Surely the risk of a nuclear war justifies refraining from provoking it with big public rehearsals.
Over the next two weeks, NATO is flying B-52 long-range bombers from North Dakota to Europe, flying pretend bombing flights over Belgium, the North Sea, and the United Kingdom, and engaging in what NATO calls "a range of realistic and simulated events which can be found in a conflict."
Click here to tell Congress and President Biden to make NATO cease its nuclear war rehearsals!
Appearing on the national TV and radio program Democracy Now! today, RootsAction’s national director Norman Solomon announced the launch of this campaign to halt the NATO nuclear war exercises. You can watch here:
NATO maintains that in its nuclear war rehearsal, airplanes will "exercise nuclear deterrence capabilities." Surely "deterrence" is not an aggressive aerial maneuver "found in a conflict," but something that is supposed to prevent a conflict. The pretense that this madness makes any sense is crumbling.
More and more people are getting active and pressuring the U.S. government to reverse course. We coordinated actions all around the United States this past weekend. Now is a moment to insist on a turn toward sanity.

NATO's nuclear war rehearsal uses Belgian, German, Italian, and Dutch fighter jets, in clear violation of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, to which the United States has been party since 1970.
That treaty forbids the United States "to transfer to any recipient whatsoever nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices or control over such weapons or explosive devices directly, or indirectly." Yet the United States keeps nuclear weapons in Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. And it trains nations' militaries to use them.
The same treaty requires the United States "to pursue negotiations in good faith on effective measures relating to cessation of the nuclear arms race at an early date and to nuclear disarmament, and on a treaty on general and complete disarmament under strict and effective international control."
Maybe a rule-based order that actually obeyed the rules wouldn't be a bad idea!
