In a recent debate, my Republican opponent was repeatedly asked if he supports any exceptions to an abortion ban — specifically in cases of rape, incest, or the health of the pregnant woman.
His answer? He said he “stood for life” in all of those circumstances.
It’s clear that my opponent is in favor of a total abortion ban with ZERO exceptions for rape, incest, or danger to the pregnant woman’s life — but here’s the thing, friend: that life could have been mine.
I have a two-year old son. It was a high-risk pregnancy, and I had to have some difficult conversations with my doctors. I’m so thankful that both my son and I are healthy — but that’s because I was able to make my own healthcare decisions.
When we talk about abortion, we are talking about life-saving healthcare. We are talking about one of the most personal decisions a woman can make. And I will ALWAYS fight for that decision to be kept between a woman and her doctor — not politicians in Tallahassee.
But right now, reproductive rights are under attack like never before. That’s why I’m so grateful to have the support of Ruth’s List Florida.
