John,
Every major win in the environmental movement has had a robust grassroots effort behind it. It’s how activists have tackled the coal industry, and it’s how we’re going to end single-use plastics.
However, grassroots activism takes time, energy, and focused commitment. And that’s never been more true for grassroots activists working to protect our future from the impact of climate change or plastic pollution.
There’s good news; however, that can lighten the load for climate activists. The tactics used to expose the dangers of coal are now being replicated for tackling down the plastic industry. That’s why former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is providing funding to assist ongoing efforts by anti-plastics advocacy groups with an $85 million Beyond Petrochemicals campaign.
This initiative builds on the roaring success of his earlier Beyond Coal campaign, which pledged to retire 30% of U.S. coal plants before 2020 and ended up doubling that number. When we get organized, we can topple Goliaths. And this revved-up grassroots effort against the plastics industry will be ready to do just that.
SEEC members know building robust public and private activist efforts is essential to end single-use plastics and promote renewable energy.
So here’s the deal, John.
SEEC members need to know they have a grassroots movement standing with them at this critical moment. With them pushing for change within the system and grassroots activists pushing from without, we have a real shot at ending the scourge of single-use plastics once and for all. BUT, we could lose all the progress we’re making on sustainability if Republicans regain power.
Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
