I know firsthand how it feels to be targeted for my words. After my memoir In the Dream House was banned in Leander, Texas, alongside other important works of literature, I stood with writers to fight back against these blatantly targeted attempts at silencing, specifically towards LGBTQ+ authors and authors of color.
Recounting my story for my book was painful, but I’m glad I did it. I receive easily a dozen messages a week from readers who thank me and describe the life-changing experience of feeling seen.
Please join me in thanking PEN America for standing up for writers and readers across the globe.
