Hi there,Β Weβve just been to the governmentβs Department for the Environment, where we handed in our petition demanding 200 river bathing waters by 2030. We had a hugeΒ 51,689 Ocean Activists add their name. πΒ Why is it so important to get more river bathing waters? - The fact is government, water companies, and the regulator, are failing to act on sewage pollution.
- Designated bathing waters are the only blue spaces where water quality is regularly monitored for its effect on human health, and where legal obligations are put on polluting industries to clean up their act.
- So itβs simple. More bathing waters equals more transparency, equals more pressure on the polluters.
So, what's next?Β π Weβre not just sitting idly by and waiting for the government to take action. We're taking matters into our own hands. By working with community groups up and down the country, weβre looking to unleash a
wave of applications for bathing water designations, to force the water companiesβ hand. Β So, if your local river or lake is used for swimming or dipping, you can make an application for bathing water designation!Β We'll guide you through the process, from selecting a bathing site to compiling your application. Click below to chat to our Community Water Quality Officer, Kirsty, if youβre interested in applying.π
