Got 15 minutes? Give your friends election information
|
One of the most powerful things you can do to help all of our propositions and candidates is to share our endorsements with your friends and neighbors. The YIMBY brand has highly positive name recognition among likely voters, and that will be especially true with your network. If you have only 15 minutes, send a message to five local friends about the election and send them the link! It could be something like this:
Hi Friend,
There’s an election coming up November 8. I’d like to share the SF YIMBY endorsements with you. They explain why they endorsed the way they did, and they help point out how to vote to get more housing built in San Francisco.
In particular, I urge you to vote Yes on Proposition D and No on Proposition E. Proposition D will eliminate obstacles and help us build housing. Prop D is supported by Habitat for Humanity, Senator Scott Wiener, and the Nor Cal Carpenters Union. Meanwhile, Proposition E is expressly designed by the Board of Supervisors who voted down to confuse voters and thwart Proposition D.
I hope this helps as you fill out your ballot!

Housing project abandoned: A developer has abandoned a proposed housing project for 186 homes (36 rented below market rate) replacing a car wash at 400 Divisadero (at Oak St). It took from 2015 to 2019 to get permits. Delays and rising construction costs have made the proposed housing financially infeasible. Sadly, lengthy delays from one to four years are not uncommon for housing projects. What might be feasible at the beginning might become a money-losing venture after years of delays. Cutting down on delays and the red-tape that make housing harder to build is a key reason why we are boosting Prop D.
|
Housing Element letter: SF YIMBY published comments on the latest draft of the Housing Element (San Francisco's state-mandated plan to build more housing). While the latest draft is an improvement, it must be detailed and specific on the actions and the rezonings that the city will take to promote housing. Of the hundreds of programs discussed, the plan should mark and prioritize the truly essential ones. The plan must include a "circuit breaker" back-up plan to take more drastic measures if housing doesn't get built enough.
|
Deadline whoopsie: San Francisco city officials believed that they had until May 31, 2023 to submit their housing plan to the state before they face any penalties. East Bay-based Kevin Burke thought differently, and he asked the state government to weigh in. The state replied: the penalties start kicking in January 31, 2023, four months earlier than anticipated. City officials are now working to meet the new January 31 deadline.
|
Santa Monica messed around and found out: The Southern California city of Santa Monica didn't take their Housing Element process seriously before their deadline of October 31, 2021. Because the city was out of compliance, they lost local control and may be required to fast-track approval of 12 housing projects totaling 3,928 homes under the "builder's remedy". Time will tell if San Francisco will fail to meet their deadline of January 31, 2023.
