Dear Progressive Reader,
In this final newsletter of 2019, I am thinking back on the past, and certainly momentous, year. It was a year of political campaigns ([link removed][UNIQID]) and debates ([link removed][UNIQID]) , of impeachment ([link removed][UNIQID]) , and perhaps most notably a year when conversations ([link removed][UNIQID]) about the climate crisis (as well as the crisis itself ([link removed][UNIQID]) ) reached new levels.
In one example, David Kupfer reports this week on the successes and shortcomings of the recent COP25 two-week-long climate conference in Madrid. “Despite growing evidence of global climate disruption,” he writes ([link removed][UNIQID]) , “little was accomplished beyond a watered-down text that kicks most of the big issues down the road.” In addition, Jeff Abbott reports ([link removed][UNIQID]) from Guatemala on the impacts of Trump’s new “safe third country” agreements.
In spite of all the clouds on the horizon, we continue to struggle in new and ongoing ways. Looking forward, Bill Lueders writes ([link removed][UNIQID]) about his “progressive wish list for 2020.” This week, Alice Herman also tells the story ([link removed][UNIQID]) of new demands for union recognition by nurses in several states around the country. And our whole next issue of the magazine ([link removed][UNIQID]) (February/March 2020) will bring together a variety of voices to discuss what a progressive platform for change might look like.
Finally, Kiki Monifa writes for our Progressive Media Project ([link removed][UNIQID]) about her family’s celebration of Kwanzaa, the seven-day holiday that calls on people to pull together. “In this age of terror, particularly in the current political climate,” she says ([link removed][UNIQID]) , “we would all benefit to learn more about one another, and to embody Kwanzaa’s ideals of happiness, unity, and peace.”
Keep reading, and we will keep bringing you important articles on these and other issues of our time. And, for the new year, don’t forget to click here ([link removed][UNIQID]) to order your 2020 Hidden History of the United States calendar from The Progressive!
Sincerely,
Norman Stockwell
