Every time that January 6 is in the news, everyone on Team Cori is thrown back to that day, many of us immersed in the Congresswoman’s own story:
“I remember sitting up in the gallery, listening to floor speeches, knowing that there was supposed to be a protest. I walked out to see what was happening outside, and I first saw the tip-top of flags, and then I saw more of the flags. Then I realized how close they were to our building.
So I hopped on the nearest elevator and headed back to my office. When I walked in, I saw on the television that people had already breached the doors, and I thought to myself, 'Is this actually happening?' I remember sitting in the office with my team and feeling like, 'I'm back on the streets of Ferguson,' and thinking, 'If they touch these doors and come anywhere near my staff, it’s on.'
My thought process was: we banging till the end. I'm not letting them take out my people, and you're not taking me out. We've come too far.”
This happened just three days after Cori was sworn into office — and when met with armed, white supremacist insurrectionists storming the U.S. Capitol in a deadly attack — and her priorities were clear and consistent. Just as they’d been on the campaign trail and in the streets in Ferguson: her first priority was saving lives, John.
Even as the chaos unfolded outside her door — Cori got to work, drafting legislation that would call for an investigation and expulsion of the GOP members of Congress who attempted to overturn the election and incited a white supremacist attack. The resolution also condemned the targeted and malicious efforts to disenfranchise Black, brown, and Indigenous voters.
I’m proud to work with Cori because her values guide her as a legislator and leader in a way that is too uncommon in the halls of Congress — and it’s my pleasure to ask that you join our movement to re-elect Cori in November. As we’ve learned more through the January 6th hearings, Cori’s demanded action, accountability, and never shied away from calling it what it was: A coordinated, Republican-enabled, violent, white supremacist attack.
Despite the violent threats, harassment by her own colleagues, and ridicule from the far-right media that came along with it — Cori has refused to stay quiet.
