When we think of famine, we often think of a lack of food.
The reality is that it’s more complex than just a lack of food. The conditions that create food insecurity endangers children in many other ways, including a lack of access to safe water, inadequate sanitation and more. These compounding issues not only place children at a greater risk for severe acute malnutrition — which can be fatal if left untreated — they make it even more challenging for children to have hope for the future and reach their full potential.
Places around the world are feeling the consequences of food insecurity. The Horn of Africa has been especially affected — that includes Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Eritrea and Djibouti. As conditions worsen and needs continue to grow, UNICEF is appealing for $986 million to provide urgent lifesaving and climate resilience support to 4.2 million people, half of them children, in these countries.
This is no small feat, which is why we need you to pay special attention to what’s at stake and how you can help UNICEF make an impact. Learn more about the crisis developing in the Horn of Africa, and across the globe, that’s leaving millions of children at risk of famine. |
No matter how much nutrition a malnourished child has, they will not get better unless they have access to safe water and sanitation. Conflicts, like climate change, instability and displacement put these systems at risk, which can lead to disease and even death. |
Early intervention to address causes of malnutrition through monitoring and warning systems are key to UNICEF’s success in countries like Somalia and Kenya, among others. When early intervention is possible, UNICEF can help provide children and families with the resources they need — like the distribution of therapeutic treatments and drilling to access reliable groundwater — to help prevent future crises. |
This work is not possible without your support. UNICEF needs people like you to further the reach of these initiatives and create new solutions as problems arise. With situations as complex as these, it’s just as important that you stay informed so you can help deliver assistance for children. |
Thank you for your support of children around the world facing humanitarian catastrophes. Stay tuned this week for opportunities to take action and help children in the Horn of Africa, Ukraine and more.
