Hi Friend, Wow! What a year it’s been for the Green Party of Canada! When a by-election was called in Nanaimo–Ladysmith my team was ready to go! Thanks to the hard work we put in during the 2015 campaign we were able to reach thousands of supporters in advance and we had commitments for almost 1000 lawn signs. Greens from across Canada volunteered and donated to my campaign. And on May 6th we made a historic breakthrough when I became the second Green MP elected to the House of Commons. Our victory did not go unnoticed. The next day, when Prime Minister Trudeau was asked about the by-election in Nanaimo–Ladysmith, he said that “Canadians must be preoccupied with climate change.” There were hundreds of news stories about our Green Party victory, from the Nanaimo News Bulletin all the way to the UK Guardian and the Washington Post. The political agenda had shifted. That’s the power of voting Green. Elizabeth was an amazing mentor to me in the House of Commons, and we showed the country what a Green Party caucus could do. My time in Ottawa was short but effective, and when the election was called my team was ready to go again thanks to the tireless efforts of our volunteers and the incredible generosity of donors like you. 2020 will be a critical year for the Greens with the leadership contest starting soon, convention in October and some key by-election opportunities. With a minority government, we don’t have the certainty we did last time. The Green Party inspired people across Canada in 2019. We signed up thousands of new members, had excellent candidates across the country and dedicated teams supporting them. We ran a high-road campaign that we should be very proud of. More than 1.2 million Canadians voted Green. And best of all, the 2019 campaign gave us another breakthrough: the election of Jenica Atwin in Fredericton! We now have three MP’s in the house and if each of us works as hard as Elizabeth May has for the last eight years, we’ll make the Liberals feel like there’s 30 of us! I know from experience that the hard work we did in Nanaimo–Ladysmith in 2015 paid off in the by-election and the general election. And I know that all the hard work Greens have put in across the country this year is going to help us elect even more Green MPs. Now more than ever our children and grandchildren are counting on the Green Party. Our work must continue. That means staying active in our communities with our EDA’s. Helping your Green MP’s hold the government to account and building on our momentum going into the next election campaign. So many of you have already chipped in this year and from the bottom of my heart I thank you. Elizabeth, Jenica and I owe so much to the tireless efforts of our volunteers and the amazing generosity of donors. So thank you. And Happy Holidays! With gratitude, Paul Manly |
