Dear John,

Today's Professional Development event for Health Affairs Insiders has been rescheduled to October 27 at 4:00 PM. Become an Insider to register for "Disability, Health, And Accessibility In Health Services Research" today.
Ableism Among Physicians
People with disabilities face barriers to accessing health care services. These barriers include physical inaccessibility of care settings, inadequate accommodations for communication needs, and ableist attitudes among providers.

To study these barriers, Tara Lagu and coauthors conducted focus groups with physicians and found that many primary care and specialist physicians expressed explicit bias against people with disabilities and reported strategies for discharging them from their practices.

“Physicians raised concerns about the expense of providing physical and communication accommodations, including insufficient reimbursement for physicians’ efforts and competing demands for staff time and other practice resources,” the authors report.

The authors' findings lead them to argue for improvements in medical education to better prepare physicians to care for people with disabilities.

Tara Lagu speaks in depth about these research findings and their policy implication on a recent episode of A Health Podyssey.

Elsewhere At Health Affairs
Elsewhere in Forefront, Hoangmai Pham and coauthors envision a redesign of Medicare payment for current and new primary care functions and increased payment levels, proposing a hybrid of population-based payments and fee-for-service.
