Hi John,As we close out 2019 and look ahead to 2020, we wanted to take some time to reflect on all that the CODEPINK community in Washington D.C. has accomplished this past year. All we can say is: WOW what a year it has been! From standing firm and protecting the Venezuelan embassy to supporting Jane Fonda at Fire Drill Fridays, read on to be inspired by some of the great work we’ve done this year as we gear up to take on the war machine and cultivate our local peace economy in 2020! We can't do this important work without your incredible support, so if you can, donate here to make sure that we can continue this work throughout 2020! On Tuesday, February 5, CODEPINK DC served John Bolton an indictment for his involvement in War Crimes in Venezuela, Iraq, Iran and Palestine, as well as his contempt for international law, particularly the International Criminal Court.
In March, we showed our solidarity with Chelsea Manning, the brave whistleblower who continues to be targeted by the U.S. government for exposing U.S. war crimes
In April, CODEPINK and Popular Resistance began the Embassy Protection Collective to protect the DC Venezuelan embassy from a US supported coup. The saga at the DC Venezuelan embassy was a microcosm of the US supported coup attempt in Venezuela.
Reverend Jesse Jackson joined our call for No War with Venezuela and helped deliver much-needed supplies to protesters inside the Venezuelan Embassy.
While protecting the embassy, we also took our message to Congress. We disrupted war criminal Elliot Abrams.
And Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who was advocating for a U.S.-backed coup in Venezuela.
In June, we protested outside of the White House to say Peace with Iran.
In September, we joined youth from around the world for the Youth Climate Strike. We reminded everyone that #WarIsNotGreen.
In October we remembered Khashoggi on the one year anniversary of his death in front of Saudi Embassy and called to #BoycottSaudi.
We also joined LGBT groups in front of the Supreme Court to advocate for equal rights for all of our siblings in the peace community.
On Friday, November 8, CODEPINK and over 200 of our allies marched with Jane Fonda for Fire Drill Fridays to make the connection between the climate crisis and unfettered militarism. Jane’s reminder that “the movement for climate justice is a movement for peace” continues to inspire us as we move into 2020 to take on the twin evils of climate change and militarism with our #WarIsNotGreen campaign.
We also stood in solidarity with the Bolivian community and attended the OAS Protest with ANSWER and the DC Bolivian Community to say no Coup in Bolivia!
Throughout the fall, we joined another #ShutdownDC actions to bring our message that War is Not Green to the climate movement!
This has been an incredible year working for peace together. We wish you a happy holiday season and look forward to working for peace in the New Year! Towards peace, Ariel, Clara, Leonardo, Medea, Michelle, Paki, Raegan, Teri, Tighe, and the entire CODEPINK team |
