Anonymous, Late last month, a dead sperm whale washed up on a Scottish beach. What did researchers find in its stomach? Two hundred and twenty pounds of "rope, plastic cups, bags, gloves, packing straps and tubing."1 This sickening event is becoming all too familiar, as whales, birds, sea turtles and other marine life wash up on beaches around the world, bloated with plastic. And still, every year, 8 million more tons of plastic make their way into our rivers, streams and oceans.2 We may only use a foam cup or a plastic straw for a few moments, but these products don't disappear when we're done using them. They can stay in our environment for centuries, killing wildlife and filling our water with microplastics. That's why we're working to pass bans on the worst single-use plastics in Colorado, to replace these materials with alternatives already available to us. In 2020, we want to go all-in on the fight against plastic pollution. Help us meet our goal of $200,000 by midnight, Dec. 31, to support all of our vital environmental campaigns. We know we can win. This year, we led the charge to pass the first statewide bans on polystyrene foam takeout containers in Maine and Maryland. And in 2019 alone, we and our national network were instrumental in passing plastic bag bans in seven states. This year, we want to do even more -- but these kinds of victories take resources. Be part of our work to protect the environment by making a donation today. Thank you, Hannah Collazo |
