Covid-19 Autumn Boosters

Covid booster

I am pleased to hear that more than 150,000 people in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire have already booked appointments to top up their immunity with a Covid-19 Autumn Booster jab.

It’s really important that we all continue to get vaccinated, especially as winter approaches when cases of flu and respiratory viruses can increase.

The vaccine is still our best protection against the virus, so I would urge anyone who is eligible, and not yet had their booster, to book in for their latest dose. We know that immunity fades over time, even if you have already had the virus, so topping it up with a jab really is our best defence.

The Autumn Booster jab is now being offered to everyone aged 50 and over, and others including people with certain health conditions, carers, and frontline health and social care workers.

You can find your nearest vaccination centre via 119 or nhs.uk [ [link removed] ].

Celebrating 125 years of public ownership for Nottingham City Transport

NCT 125 years

NCT have unveiled a special Nottingham themed bus, celebrating everything that makes our city great! Can you spot the over 20 references to our city hidden in the design?

It’s to celebrate 125 years since October 1897 when Nottingham City Council took over running what was then the Nottingham Tramway Company. NCT itself is now as much a part of the fabric of the city as Goose Fair, the Council House lions and many of the other local icons featured on the bus.

It's thanks to one of my forebears as leader here at the City Council that we still have Nottingham City Transport in public and council-controlled ownership – allowing us to make Nottingham’s buses some of the greenest and best in the country.

Betty Higgins, Nottingham City Council’s first woman leader, had the strength and foresight to fight to keep NCT publicly owned during the bus reforms in the 1980s. A legacy which has had a lasting impact - and is one of the reasons we have the best buses in the country.

New short film launched to raise awareness of the need for foster carers

Last week a new short film was launched to raise awareness of the urgent need for more foster carers, called Childhood.

The film follows the journey of Sophie and her younger brother Charlie, whose needs are not being met at home, as they try to cope with their situation and showing them as they are then taken through the foster care process, so that they can attend school and fully enjoy their hobbies and interests as any child should.

I am proud that we have been able to take part in this national collaboration between 56 local authorities from across England, which highlights the importance of the work that foster carers do each and every day. It shows the need we are all facing for more people to come forward to become foster carers themselves, so that we can help more children such as Sophie and Charlie. You can find out more about the campaign here [ [link removed] ].

Please watch the film here on our YouTube channel [ [link removed] ] and share it with friends, family and colleagues to help us find loving and nurturing homes for those children in desperate need of them. If you are interested in learning more about fostering or taking the next step towards fostering a child yourself, please get in contact with us by visiting our website [link removed] [ [link removed] ] or calling 0115 876 3335.

It’s the start of the two-week half term and many families will be looking for things to do to keep the children entertained. I’d also like to thank local organisations for their holiday activity programmes too.

And finally

Cllr Campbell

I had the pleasure of attending the Black Achievers Awards on Saturday night. The awards aim to change the perception of the black community by celebrating black role models across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.

It was great to hear the inspiring stories of what people in Nottingham have been achieving for their communities and local businesses. It was particularly special to watch my colleague Cllr Campbell-Clarke receive a Lifetime Achievement award for her 33 years of public service as a local councillor.
