A conversation about bystander intervention with Anti-Racism Daily

The Anti-Racism Daily-ARD spoke with Emily May, Right To Be’s President, Co-Founder, and Lead Executive Officer and Jorge Arteaga, Vice President and Lead Operations Officer, about bystander intervention and what to do if you witness harassment. Check out the interview and learn more about our 5Ds and how to take action!

I've Got Your Back Public Book Discussion

Our stories connect us as human beings by creating empathy. Bystander intervention is a way to turn our empathy into concrete action, reducing harm along the way. We all have a role to play when it comes to ending hate and harassment in our communities.

Every Thursday starting October 20th until November 17th, we will offer a live book discussion series led by the book’s authors: Emily May and Jorge Arteaga. This series will take the ideas of I’ve Got Your Back beyond its pages and put them into practice in real life. It is for anyone who wants to cultivate a deeper engagement with this book in a community setting.

Supporting the LGBTQIA+ Community

On the 18th and 28th, Right To Be will teach you the 5Ds of bystander intervention methodology and how these strategies can be used to support the LGBTQIA+ community. We’ll talk about the types of disrespect that LGBTQIA+ folx are facing right now — including stigma, discrimination, and harassment stemming from misinformation about the current monkeypox outbreak in the U.S. — using a tool we call the “spectrum of disrespect.” You’ll learn what to look for and the positive impact that bystander intervention has on individuals and communities. We’ll talk through five strategies for intervention: distract, delegate, document, delay, and direct; and how to prioritize your own safety while intervening. We’ll have time at the end for practice, and you’ll leave feeling more confident intervening the next time you see anti-LGBTQIA+ harassment.

You still have time to show up and show us who you have the Right To Be! Our Right To Be YOU campaign will last through November 4th. We have already kicked off with trainings and social media challenges and still have more empowering virtual events for you all to engage with!

Be sure to connect with us on social media for real time updates!
