Plus, warnings of a bad flu season were right as outbreaks spread, and, in climate news, where have all the snow crabs gone? Email not displaying correctly?

The one-minute meeting
We start the week with a warning about an emerging new variant of the COVID-19 virus that is roaring through Europe and has epidemiologists on edge.
* The subvariant known as #BQ1.1 is especially concerning because it is possible that vaccines and boosters won’t touch it and that this version of the virus seems to spread faster than most.
* Experts also worry that the most reliable antiviral medications may not stop #BQ1.1.
* Even worse is the news that this variant is only one of the hundreds that the World Health Organization is tracking.

The flu season is arriving early this year and it could be worse than normal.
* The flu cases are highest in Georgia, New York City, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Washington, D.C.
* One California school system reported more than 1,000 students sick in just a handful of schools.

And another indication of how rising temperatures can cause catastrophic environmental problems. The Bering Sea is warming and now billions (you read that right, billions) of snow crabs are “missing.” Alaska officials have canceled the snow crab season for the first time ever, which sent shockwaves through the fishing industry that now wonders if it can survive.
