Tina for Oregon

Good morning, John—

This is a longer email than usual, but it’s important, and I hope you have the time to read it all the way through. I’d like to talk about an issue that is very important to all Oregonians — the humanitarian crisis in our own backyards.

The homelessness crisis is a complex problem that needs to be addressed with people-centered solutions that can help people achieve stability and permanent housing.

I am the only candidate with the experience and plan to tackle the housing and homelessness crisis. I championed legislation that increased housing access, shelter capacity, rent assistance, and other housing needs.

At the beginning of 2020, I called for a statewide emergency declaration on the homelessness crisis and developed a homelessness relief package that we were ready to pass in the 2020 legislative session.

Unfortunately, one of my opponents, Republican Christine Drazan, led her colleagues to walk off the job and flee the state, which ultimately killed every bill we were working on – including that homelessness relief package. Ironically, Christine is now calling for the very same emergency declaration in an attempt to rewrite her failed record on homelessness.

Thankfully, we didn’t give up on the people of Oregon or let Rep. Drazan’s obstructionism get in the way. We were able to successfully pass many of these proposals within a year. But we lost momentum nonetheless.

There’s clearly much more we have to do. As Governor, I will start tackling the crisis in the following three ways:

  • Within my first 30 days in office, I’ll form a special emergency management team with one mission: end unsheltered homelessness for veterans, families with children, unaccompanied youth, and seniors by 2025.

  • I’ll immediately prioritize expanding managed shelters, improving access to mental health and addiction services, and getting new street outreach teams on the ground to help people get off the streets, tent by tent.

  • On Day One, I will issue an executive order to increase the pace and scale of housing production statewide, with a focus on financing housing that’s affordable for middle class families.

Oregonians deserve a governor who will roll up her sleeves, sweat the details, and find real solutions to Oregon’s biggest problems. I am the only candidate in this race who will always put people over politics.

So please, I am personally asking you to contribute whatever you can to help grow our grassroots campaign and build a better future for Oregon together.
