Dear Friend,
Have you heard about the Anglican
clergyman who tried to undermine the Catholic Church but ended up
converting to Catholicism and being made a Cardinal?
Today we know him by the name of
St. John Henry Newman. He is more familiarly known simply as Cardinal
Newman and is one of the brightest lights of the Church. He offers us
incredible insight into fundamental issues of identity and doctrine
that our enemies have used against the Church for centuries. His own
conversion to Catholicism in 1845 came as a result of his studies of
the writings of the Fathers of the Church, when he realized that there
was not a Protestant among them.
In our newest Catholic Action
Insight™ series, I was privileged to conduct three interviews with two
incredible Newman scholars and devotees, Edward Short (who has written
four books on Cardinal Newman) and Karl Keating (renowned founder of
Catholic Answers). These men witness for us their own understanding of
Newman’s contribution to the Church as well as the ways they have been
personally influenced by the great churchman.
Our first video (to be sent out
tomorrow – don’t miss it!) is the most comprehensive discussion of
Newman’s life and writings. It runs a little over 20 minutes and
features a wide-ranging discussion of Newman’s overall theology and
influence on the Church. It is entitled “The Ongoing
Gift of Cardinal Newman.”
Video number two extends the
discussion of Newman to his educational legacy, which we have felt
particularly strongly in the United States. The session is
entitled “Cardinal Newman’s Idea of a
University.” (Runs 7
minutes.)
The third and final video is an
interview with Karl Keating alone who expounds upon the way in which
Newman influenced his Apologetics work. It is a fascinating discussion
which is entitled “Cardinal Newman the Catholic
Apologist.” (Also 7
minutes.)
He is one of the greatest
gifts to the Church of the past two centuries and is someone we should
all get to know better. Please stay tuned for our new series on St.
John Henry Newman to begin hitting your email box
tomorrow. If you have not subscribed to receive
emails from Catholic Action, please do so now.
