Donald Trump attempted to exploit the 1887 Electoral Count Act to stay in the White House after losing the 2020 election. It needs to be reformed to prevent anything like this from happening again.

The Senate is currently considering an overhaul of the archaic and outdated law that Trump and his allies attempted to exploit to overturn the presidential election. If we hope to keep our democracy out of the hands of election deniers, we need to make our election procedures clear and reform the Electoral Count Act. The House has already passed ECA reform, and now it’s up to the Senate to act.

The reformed ECA would make it more difficult for lawmakers to stop election certification with illegitimate or invalid objections, increase the number of lawmakers needed to object certifications, and make the roles of the vice president and governors in the electoral process more explicit.
