Friend,
My longtime colleague and friend Bill Moyers often says that the news is what those in power want to suppress; everything else is just publicity.
It's not an original observation, but a crucial one: the purpose of journalism is to tell you truths that those in authority would just as soon you not find out, to expose the lies and misdeeds of those who place venal self-interest above the greater good.
We live in a perilous time unlike any other, a time when nothing is more important than the truth, which is why those in power right now, especially the man at the top, want to keep you in the dark. He brays and struts and claims that the facts are a sham, that down is up, wrong is right and that it’s not enough for America to succeed—everyone else must tumble, fail and fall before us. The world has been down this road before. It does not end well.
Which is why Common Dreams is more important than ever. The news and views presented here—the progressive perspective on the good and bad of humankind—are an informed, intelligent and generous take on everything that’s happening all around us—and why. You won’t find it anywhere else.
Your own generosity is crucial to Common Dreams' survival. Look, I’ve worked in journalism for decades now and while I’ve written for many publications, radio, television stations, and networks, most of my work has been in public media. I’m all too familiar with the agony of the dreaded pledge week, the interruption of your news and entertainment by an announcer imploring you to give ‘til it hurts.
I know it can be a pain but it's necessary to ask, especially now. So before the year’s end, I hope you’ll see it in your heart to make a donation to Common Dreams. You won’t get a tote bag, but you will have the satisfaction of helping out the hardworking staff of Common Dreams and making sure it remains a place dedicated to interpreting and sharing with you the facts from across the nation and around the world that the bad guys don't want you to know.
Thank you so much!
