Dear MoveOn member,
When we think of Reverend Raphael Warnock, Democratic U.S. senator from Georgia, we think of dignity, compassion, and a voice for the voiceless. A man who grew up in public housing with his 11 siblings to become the youngest senior pastor in the history of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, the historic church where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. grew up and where he remained a pastor until his assassination in 1968. Ebenezer Baptist has a nearly 150-year-long history of fighting for civil rights, and Reverend Warnock continued that tradition as senior pastor until his election to the Senate in 2021.
When we think of his opponent, Herschel Walker, we think of … well … none of that.
Throughout his campaign, Walker has been exposed for his unethical business practices, for committing multiple horrific acts of domestic violence, and most recently, for benefiting from the very same access to safe, legal abortion that he wants to strip away from every single person in the United States.1,2,3 And yet, he could still very well win a seat in the U.S. Senate and hand back control of the chamber to Mitch McConnell.
That's right. There is almost no path to keeping the Senate in Democratic hands if we lose Georgia. Democrats would have to hold every other Democratic seat across the country and flip at least one red state blue.
We feel so strongly about the importance of winning Georgia that today we are asking you to donate directly to Rev. Warnock's re-election campaign, with none of your contribution coming to us.
Will you make a $3 contribution today to Raphael Warnock's campaign to support a true leader and help make sure Georgia stays blue and Mitch McConnell stays out of power?
We expect you have heard the latest about Herschel Walker, that he paid for his then-partner to have an abortion in 2009, despite supporting a total ban on abortion with no exceptions.4 After claiming repeatedly that he had never met the woman and knew nothing about her, she revealed that she is also the mother of one of his four children.5
As hypocritical as this is, the deeper hypocrisy is with GOP leadership that stands with Walker's pattern of lies and disturbing immoral behavior.
"Republicans stand with him," said Senator Rick Scott, the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee in the wake of the most recent scandal.6
"Full speed ahead in Georgia," declared Steven Law, president of the Senate Leadership Fund–the leading Senate Republican Super PAC aligned with Senator Mitch McConnell.7
Even right-wing radio went all-in: "I don't care if Herschel Walker paid to abort endangered baby eagles, I want control of the Senate," said Dana Loesch, former NRA spokesperson and far-right radio host.8
That's because Republicans are focused on one thing, and one thing only—taking control of the U.S. Senate so the GOP can take away a pregnant person's bodily autonomy, strip the LGBTQ+ community of basic human rights, suppress voters, and install Trump in the White House in 2024.
And their only path to doing that is through Georgia. Because if they can't flip Georgia, then they must hold Ohio, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania and then flip some other state like Arizona. Those odds are very, very, very slim.
That's why we are asking you today to make an emergency donation to Rev. Warnock's campaign. He is currently leading by only 3 points—within the margin of error—but momentum is on his side, and we can't let that slip.9
Please chip in $3 or whatever you can afford today. As we said, 100% of your gift will go directly to his campaign, and we know how grateful he will be. Indeed, how grateful all of us will be that you helped keep Mitch McConnell out of power!
Thanks for all you do.
