Weekend Reading

Dear John,

Thank you to everyone who took action this week urging Congress to draft a robust Farm Bill that reduces hunger and addresses climate change. If you haven’t yet taken action, please send a message to your representative today! [link removed]

Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:

Why we all have a stake in the next Farm Bill: [link removed] Congress is starting to draft the next Farm Bill, which must be authorized every five years. This massive piece of legislation includes nearly $1 trillion in spending. It governs the nation’s farming, nutrition, and conservation programs. And it touches the daily lives of every person in the U.S. and many around the world. Here’s what you need to know, writes AFSC’s Peniel Ibe.

"Light in Gaza" Speaking tour: [link removed] "Light in Gaza: Writings Born of Fire" is a new anthology published by AFSC and Haymarket Books. As part of a two-week tour starting Oct. 17,  Palestinian authors Asmaa Abu Mezied and Yousef Aljamal will travel to U.S. cities speaking about life in Gaza under Israel’s brutal blockade. Sign the petition to phase out fossil fuels: [link removed] AFSC is joining Stand.earth, Daily Kos, and other partners in urging the U.S. to commit to a global treaty phasing out fossil fuels. Sign the petition to show your support ahead of next month’s United Nations COP27 climate change conference.

Community Safety Beyond Policing: Understanding Copaganda (Oct. 20, 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT): [link removed] How do popular culture and the news media shape our view of the criminal legal system and policing? And what are the effects on policymaking and elections? We’ll discuss this and more with guest speakers Palika Makam of the 8th Amendment Project and Alec Karakatsanis of Civil Rights Corps.

Quaker Call to Action (video): [link removed] This week people from across the country gathered online to discuss nonviolent actions we can all take to help protect our democracy. Visit our page to view the recording.

Be well and take care
