On this week’s episode ([link removed]) : After decades of stripping away Native American identity from its students, a Catholic school on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota is facing its past. The Red Cloud School is searching for students who may be buried in unmarked graves. The school has brought in ground-penetrating radar to examine selected parts of the campus, but for some residents, that effort is falling short. They want the entire campus scanned for potential graves.
This is the first of a two-part collaboration with ICT (formerly Indian Country Today) that exposes the painful legacy of boarding schools for Native children.

Takeaways from this year’s (potentially) final Jan. 6 committee public hearing. Last week ([link removed]) , we explained there were some key issues unresolved for the committee, like whether it would issue a subpoena to former President Donald Trump. In Thursday’s hearing, we learned the answer. The nine-member committee voted unanimously to subpoena him to “provide both documents and testimony about the attempts to overturn the election,” The New York Times writes ([link removed]) . In a Thursday evening post on his social network website, Truth Social, Trump dismissed the committee as a “laughing stock.” Does he have to comply? It’s a crime not to, but as this Reuters explainer says ([link removed]) , he could “fight the subpoena in court, as he has done in other battles with Congress,
or try to negotiate the terms of his cooperation.”
The committee also showed evidence that Trump privately conceded to those close to him that he lost the election, despite his false and public claims that the election was stolen from him due to voter fraud. In testimony by former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson, she recalled the former president telling chief of staff Mark Meadows “something to the effect of ‘I don’t want people to know we lost, Mark. This is embarrassing. Figure it out.’ ”
“The testimony was presented to bolster a case the committee has sought to make: that Trump was acting in bad faith to keep power and deliberately deceiving his followers with false claims,” NBC News writes ([link removed]) .
We learned that the Secret Service had warnings more than a week before Jan. 6 that Trump supporters were planning an attack on the Capitol. “Secret Service agents in charge of assessing the risks around the protests had been tracking online chats on pro-Trump websites and noted that rallygoers were vowing to bring firearms, target the Capitol for a siege and even kill Vice President Mike Pence,” The Washington Post writes ([link removed]) .
Lastly, the committee showed footage ([link removed]) of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and other congressional leaders from both parties on Jan. 6 calling the secretary of defense, the acting attorney general and governors of neighboring states for help, as well as working together to plan how they would return to finish certifying Joe Biden’s presidential victory.

After Ayotzinapa comes to San Francisco. Reveal’s Anayansi Diaz-Cortes and Kate Doyle from the National Security Archive, lead reporters in the series ([link removed]) , will be discussing their investigation into the case of the 2014 kidnapping and disappearance of 43 Mexican students from the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers’ College. The events are free and open to the public and include family members of the disappeared students and the former special prosecutor in the case, Omar Gómez Trejo.
