For the first time in 25 years, no Democrat running for Congress has a top rating from the NRA. And it’s not only Democrats — the amount of Republicans receiving poor grades from the NRA has increased sharply: In all, 40% of candidates received F’s.
This reaffirms that our life-saving work across Congress, the courts, and communities is having a real impact. Not long ago, many candidates wouldn’t even go on the record about gun violence prevention because they feared gun lobby backlash. But now our lawmakers and individuals seeking office are finally acknowledging NRA extremism — and they’re taking a stand against it. The NRA's stronghold on Congress is continuing to weaken and momentum is on our side.
We can save more lives with gun violence prevention champions in Congress. We saw this play out in real-time this summer as President Biden signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act into law — the first gun safety law in nearly THIRTY years — and the House passed bills to ban assault weapons and strengthen community violence prevention efforts.
I want to be really clear, we’ve gotten here because of grassroots supporters like you, John, and we’ll need your support to end the NRA’s dangerous influence, once and for all. Will you consider donating today to help us keep fighting for a Congress that works for the people, not the NRA?

Gun Violence Survivors Deserve Better
The sentencing verdict in the case of the Parkland, FL, shooter was announced this week. Brady is thinking of the survivors and families who suffered an unspeakable loss that day — a loss that will endure for a lifetime. We’ve also seen other actions in past weeks that demonstrate the long-lived impact of these tragedies.
Alex Jones was ordered to pay nearly $1 billion in damages for claims that the Sandy Hook shooting was a “hoax” intended to bolster the “gun control” movement. The survivors of the 2017 Sutherland Springs church shooting called on the Department of Justice to drop its misguided appeal of a federal court ruling, which is stonewalling them from getting the justice they deserve. And just two days ago, the community of Raleigh, NC, was devastated by a mass shooting that killed five people, including a teen and a police officer, and injured two others.
John, gun violence survivors deserve better. The path to recovery is long, and too often survivors are faced with events that reinforce the pain they have endured. Today, and every day, gun violence survivors need our nation’s collective understanding, resources, and support. Please join Brady in learning about how you can support victims and survivors of gun violence.

ICYMI: Gov. Newsom Signs TWO Gun Safety Bills into Law
|
In early October, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed TWO bills into law that will strengthen gun dealer security (SB 1384) and create much-needed oversight at California gun shows (AB 2552).
For years, the federal government has allowed federally licensed gun dealers to operate without basic security or safety measures. In turn, firearms are sold irresponsibly, or in some cases stolen, and inevitably fuel the proliferation of trafficked firearms in our country. SB 1384 is a sensible solution that requires dealers to maintain liability insurance and install point-of-sale video surveillance.
A second new law, AB 2552, promotes responsible gun sales at gun shows. For too long, a lack of oversight at gun shows has led to firearms ending up in the hands of prohibited purchasers, gun traffickers, and people intent on doing harm. This new law will require annual inspections at gun shows, increase penalties for violations, and mandate show promoters provide materials and resources on safe firearm storage, domestic violence, mental health, and more.
California is a leader in passing strong, evidence-based gun laws — and we’re proud to have helped pass an entire slate of gun safety laws this session. Please join us in celebrating this victory!

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month 💜
In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we're drawing special attention to the role firearms play in acts of domestic violence and the life-saving solutions to prevent it. Every day, about three people are shot and killed by an intimate partner, and 54% of mass shootings are related to domestic or family violence.
While anyone can experience domestic violence, data shows that women are uniquely vulnerable. In fact, a woman is shot and killed by a current or former partner every 16 hours, and when there is a gun in a home with a history of domestic violence, there is a 500% higher chance that a woman will be murdered.
The passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act is a massive step forward in addressing gun violence within intimate partner violence. It partially closes the ‘boyfriend loophole,’ a gap in federal law that permits some individuals subject to domestic violence restraining orders or convicted of domestic violence to legally purchase or possess a firearm.
To learn more about what the bill does, what still needs to be done, and how we can protect victims of domestic violence, listen to our podcast with Rachel Graber, the director of public policy at the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

🎧 Episode 207: How History is Against Expanded Gun Rights
The gun lobby is fond of a particular view of American history — one where firearms reigned supreme and unregulated. But that view of America's past is deeply distorted, as Dr. Robert Spitzer details in his new book, "The Gun Dilemma: How History is Against Expanded Gun Rights." We're joined by Dr. Spitzer to detail the ways in which courts — especially the Supreme Court — have been using a mix of originalist theory and misunderstood history to rule on gun issues.
