Peggy Speaking at Transportation Policy Is Climate Policy, with Secretary Pete Buttigieg

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg will speak on Tuesday, October 18, 3 - 4 pm, about the Biden-Harris administration’s historic investments in transportation, which not only will help combat climate change, but also will benefit historically marginalized communities.

The conversation will be followed by a panel discussion, featuring Peggy Shepard and other leaders in the transportation, climate, and equity fields, and will examine the ways in which policymakers can and are making meaningful progress towards environmental justice.

TAKE ACTION: Bring the Zero Waste Bill Package to a vote!

The New York City Council’s Zero Waste Bill Package is a critical bill package for environmental justice in our city that WE ACT has been advocating for! This bill package will expand access to composting and recycling options for all households in Northern Manhattan, and will set the city on course to achieve zero waste by 2030. Youth: Come Learn About Equitable Transportation & Air Quality

Join us for the final workshop in our Environmental Health and Justice Leadership Training (EHJLT) series for youth, TOMORROW, Oct 15th at 11am! We will be exploring how affordable, equitable transit is critical to communities of color and the impacts of transit on local air quality.

And join us for the EHJLT Final EXPO Tuesday, Oct 18th at 6pm! This will be the culmination of the series where participants will share the projects they have been working on related to an environmental justice topic of their choosing. The EXPO will also provide participants with the opportunity to connect with and learn from other youth organizers from NY about their work and communities.

Transportation Group Kicks Off Oct 17!

If you want to become an advocate for cleaner, greener transportation that is affordable and accessible to all, join our Transportation Working Group. We meet at 6 pm on the third Monday of each month to share ideas, develop recommendations, and advocate for improved transportation for our community. NYCHA Oversight Hearing

On October 19th at 1pm at City Hall, there will be an opportunity for NYCHA residents to give oral testimony regarding how NYCHA engages with residents and how they do outreach. There is also an opportunity to submit written comments by October 21st.

At this hearing, the City Council Committee on Public Housing expects a comprehensive look at how NYCHA is engaging with residents in all major areas of service. There have been many instances where NYCHA residents have noted NYCHA had failed to provide advance or adequate notice about major policy changes or proposals, including the initial announcement of the Public Housing Preservation Trust in the summer of 2020.

DIY Beauty Night

Join WE ACT, Youth Council members from Columbia's Centre for Children's Environmental Health and 8th graders from MS 331 in the Bronx for a DIY Beauty Night! Participants will create their own beauty products, and learn about the ingredients in the products they use on a daily basis.

Bring your friends, family, and some of your favorite beauty products from home. Make sure to arrive early - the first 50 people to arrive will be entered into a raffle for some fantastic beauty-related prizes! Technical Assistance for Justice40

Join the Justice40 and Technical Assistance webinar at 2 pm, Thursday, Oct 20th, to hear from the Anthropocene Alliance, Environmental Protection Network, Justice40 Accelerator, and Thriving Earth Exchange, who are currently working to achieve the goals of the Justice40 Initiative by providing technical assistance to community-based organizations to allow for greater access to Federal investments. These organizations will share information about some of the capacity-building pro bono resources they offer to communities with environmental justice concerns, including assistance identifying and applying for government funding, and technical, scientific, and legal assistance.

TED Talk by Greg Kats: Addressing Urban Heat and Climate Change

Greg Kats recently gave a TED talk ([link removed]) on environmental justice and extreme heat. He spoke about how adopting Smart Surfaces city wide Baltimore will cool its downtown 5 degrees, save $13 billion, slow climate change, protect its tourism industry and solve structural urban racial inequities and other ways that we can address urban heat.
