Last week, New York City Mayor Eric Adams declared the migrant surge a state of emergency, claiming the influx would cost the city about $1 billion.
More than 17,000 migrants have been bused to the city since the spring, a small fraction of the migrant encounters at the border over that timeframe. Texas has two-thirds of the border with Mexico. We're seeing hundreds and thousands come across our border in a month. So the fact that they're getting several buses with 50 or 71 illegal immigrants — Mayor Adams is crying wolf because that shouldn't be a problem for New York. We deal with it in Texas all the time.
I applaud Gov. Abbott and think he should continue to send migrants. But these sanctuary cities claim they will take in migrants until they show up at their doorsteps, and then it's a state of emergency. There is an invasion at our southern border. President Biden shouldn't give a dime to NYC until he addresses the real crisis that we have at the Texas Border.

Record illegal border crossings under this Administration have led to more drugs, more crime, and a demoralized Border Patrol who are hamstrung from carrying out their law enforcement mission. The situation at the border has become both a national security and humanitarian crisis and must be addressed immediately. We have a plan to regain control of the southern border:- Fully fund effective border enforcement strategies, infrastructure, and advanced technology to prevent illegal crossings and trafficking by cartels.
- End catch-and-release loopholes.
- Require proof of legal status to get a job.
- Eliminate welfare incentives.
In 2021, our southern border erupted into chaos and ever since the Biden administration has been in denial about this unprecedented crisis. The American people deserve safety and security and a Republican majority that delivers common sense solutions, not dangerous policies that weaken law enforcement and open our borders.

For over 100 years our great service academies have produced some of America’s greatest leaders. Not only are these programs producing military leaders, they are also molding better citizens for America. They prepare our youth to be well-rounded leaders and agile thinkers who will take their lessons of discipline and leadership with them into both military and civilian careers.
Part of my privilege as a Member of Congress is that I am authorized to nominate candidates for appointment to the U.S. Service Academies. Every year I look forward to reading those applications. I am always impressed by the character, selflessness, and -- above all -- the devotion to the ideals of our great nation. The honor of attending a service academy comes with the obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation.
Each member of Congress may nominate up to ten individuals for each vacant academy slot allotted to our district for appointment to four of the five U.S. service academies: U.S. Military Academy (USMA), West Point, NY; the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), Annapolis, MD; the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA), Colorado Springs, CO; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Kings Point, NY. The fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), New London, CT, does not require a congressional nomination for appointment.
Below you will find all the information to start the process, including checklists and important dates. This year's deadline is Friday, October 21, 2022. I would also encourage you to watch the videos linked here and here (part II) called “The Five-Pointed Star.” It’s a great overview of what each of the US Service Academies have to offer.
To request a Military Academy Nomination from our office, please contact Jared Bargas, District Director, at [email protected] or (281) 316-0231 for more information.
Best wishes to you as you pursue your goal of attending one of the U.S. Service Academies and serving our country!

This week, I toured the Salt Bayou Marsh Restoration with Ducks Unlimited, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This project will ensure that the coastline has the necessary investments to help protect against future storms. This is vital for the Gulf Coast region and our nation. I recently introduced the Reinvesting in Shoreline Economies and Ecosystems Act, which would protect coastal communities by creating a new stream of funding for coastal infrastructure and flood resiliency projects.
also attended the Beaumont Chamber Political and Governmental Affairs Committee Meeting to discuss how our office, your office – we work for you - can help businesses around Jefferson County thrive. This week, we celebrated National Farmers Day! I grabbed lunch with some members of Texas Farm Bureau to discuss key agricultural issues farmers in TX-14 are facing. Feeding and clothing our nation and the world is no easy task, yet America’s farmers, ranchers, and producers rise to the occasion each and every day.
