This week, I presented Social Security Champion Awards to two of my favorite members of Congress — Reps. Susan Wild (D-PA) and Matt Cartwright (D-PA).

Wild and Cartwright both represent competitive districts. And they understand that the way to win in those districts is by championing issues supported by Democratic, Republican, and independent voters alike — expanding Social Security, improving Medicare, and lowering drug prices.

Rep. Susan Wild is a key leader on lowering drug prices. She frequently reminds her fellow Democrats that taking on Big Pharma’s greed is both good politics and a moral necessity. Wild played a huge role in passing the Inflation Reduction Act, which finally gives Medicare the power to negotiate lower prices on key prescription drugs.

This year, redistricting added Republican territory to Wild’s district. Many members of Congress in that situation would have decided not to run for reelection, instead becoming a high-paid corporate lobbyists. Not Susan Wild.

FiveThirtyEight ranks Wild’s race as the third most competitive in the country. Wild understands that Republican-leaning voters support expanding Social Security and lowering drug prices — but Republican politicians don’t. That’s why, with our help, she’s going to win this November.

Rep. Matt Cartwright is one of only four House Democrats who represents a district that Donald Trump won in both 2016 and 2020. How does he keep getting re-elected? Our Executive Director Alex Lawson told HuffPost :

“Cartwright is the type of member in a tight district who understands that people want very commonsense things like lower drug prices, increased Social Security benefits — things that people agree on. It’s so basic that it’s hard to understand that it’s rare in D.C.”

As a member of Congress, Cartwright fights for seniors and working people — not Wall Street. Now, he needs our help to continue the fight.
